The Great Lakes moderate the temperatures around them and as you leave them temperatures may well rise as they did when we left sea breeze Vermilion and then Huron and headed inland. It has been a hot and humid day. We are plastered with sun lotion (factor 30 initially but I saw some factor 100 so it's more of a sunblock...!), wearing dark glasses, shorts and cycling T shirts. The cycling is now flatter ( even) and the roads run straight for 10 or 20 miles, perhaps more. Air conditioning buzzes away everywhere - except in the cyclist's tent - and crickets buzz while firefly's spark around us in the evening light. I noticed a solar array on a farmers shed - seems odd it's so rare in such bright sun. After Huron we went via Avery, Clyde (great cycle path here to) Fremont and finally Gibsonburg. Where we are at a county park. It's great - hot showers and excellent camping and not many here after the 4th July rush. Our diet is not too varied - we're relying on pretty small grocery stores (people don't seem to understand the phrase 'grocery shop') and 'filling stations' (sadly this makes me think of the dentist). Tonight hummus (US spelling), pumpernickel bread (sort of dark rye), nectarines and yoghurt. Plenty of conversations today - one woman sweetly rounded down my bill so I didn't have to struggle with the US coinage (I wasn't struggling, just trying to give her the exact money - this is obviously unusual, especially now most people wave a card instead of cash), a biker on a rather nice (german) velocipede (low slung trike near to ground) talked of his regular exercise on this machine along the traffic free bike way - Kevin, trike and human powered vehicles enthusiast; and not to forget the bike shop owner in Vermilion who sold Guy some brake blocks for his cantilevers but gave me energy gummies as a freebie. I probably looked like I needed them.... Oh, they are vegetarian so just perfect, and we've a 60+ day tomorrow so perhaps timely. I hope the temperatures fall enough to sleep well tonight - there are too many mozzies to leave the doors open.... The photo is the road just before Gibsonburg - Guy a little dot in the distance.
