The Perry of North Perry was a Captain in the US Navy and fought the British with some success in the war of 1812. So Lake Erie has known relatively small scale naval battles. We got going by about 9.40am and headed through the many towns that spread pretty much without a gap all the way to Cleveland. Two sporty older cyclists chatted to us today, both interested in our journey and both locals who are interested in the improvement of the roads for cyclists. The first one was keeping up with the Tour de France but also in seeing cycling grow in the area - cycling being, of course, the answer to many of our environmental, social and transport questions. And it keeps you fit too.... The second one made the point that car drivers assume bikes should be on the shoulder of the road but this is contradicted by Ohio State law which says cyclists are OK to use the carriageway. This last bit it obviously true since there isn't always a shoulder. He was beeped at by a driver for cycling on the road alongside us. There were a lot of cyclists about. A slender fit older lady asked my opinion on her brakes (V brakes). The front set were a bit mangled and needed replacing. She said she could hardly walk due to knee problems but cycling seemed fine. Tomorrow she was due to have a knee op so the bike could be handed over to the repair shop. The roads often had bike lanes and that plus sunny weather had brought out the riders. We went through the middle of downtown Cleveland - past the museum of rock music at one point. The photo is of the route as we approached downtown Cleveland - the enormous mural of whales on the Cleveland Public Energy building - and you can just see Guy being overtaken by a couple of outsize trucks. We went alongside the lake and saw a crowded Lake Erie beach, and through a few canyons between sky scrapers. The area to the west of the centre had some lovely houses - arts and crafts - with the blue lake behind them. We passed through a string of small towns, merged one into the next. We shopped once more at the Dollar General, they are so often the only store left. I rejected the plastic bag saying that in the UK we have to pay for them. The lady in the queue said she agreed - 'here they just add to the trash'. And then to the Riverview RV and Park.Ar $50 with pay for showers it is not good value really, but it's what we need after a ride of nearly 90 miles. We are about a quarter of the way across the USA - something like 1000 miles. My bike computer says more than this but it includes a few test rides.....
