Sunday 15th September 2024 - Bainbridge Island to Seatac (Seattle Tacoma) Airport to Heathrow. 7 miles by bike.

We packed up and headed to the airport at 8.40am, caught the 9.40am ferry, bought two bike boxes at the Seattle Amtrak station ($15 each), caught the light rail from a couple of hundred yards away through to SeaTac where we dragged and carried the boxes into the departure area. Dismantling and putting the bikes in the boxes took a while - we folded the top of the box over - cutting the cardboard to make an access at the top (the Amtrak boxes were accessed from the side originally as you simply rolled your bike in, without removing the wheels. This meant they were effectively the 6' x 3' x 2' that BA says is a bike box. The wheels removed and a defensive arrangement of camping stuff and clothes giving some protection to the bike. The box weighed, in both our cases, about 22.6kg (23kg is the max weight). They were checked in and then the bloke in oversize baggage slit all our lovely tape open again for the security search.. Oh well. Hope they are OK. The flight was about 9 hours long and overnight. The train back to Pembrokeshire was the familiar mix of bike spaces being full of anything but bikes, late and cancelled trains, cycling from Swansea to Carmarthen, 35 miles or so, because of an announced bus replacement service (and sunny weather) and a haggle to get the bikes on a bus replacement service, when it was dark (an unexpected bus replacement and not on the schedule). The bus driver was a gem and didn't mind at all. There's plenty of space in a large bus's luggage area for bikes - when there's just a handful of late night passengers. I would note that bike route 4 is a meandering route that doesn't fully answer the need to get home before dark. Home sweet home! I shall post a full list of everything taken on this transam. - the photo is from route 4 near Gowerton. The final total mileage in the USA was 4717 - including our time in Puget Sound. But what should our next long bike ride be?
