Tuesday 3rd September 2024 - From Deception Pass to San Juan Island - 28 miles by cycle, 20-ish by ferry.

We want to see the San Juan islands in Puget Sound - they are nearer Canada than the USA - and cycle around the perimeter road of San Juan Island, a ride which has been recommended to us. We set off from Deception Pass via the 20, the traffic was reduced from the bank holiday madness of recent days but still busy. We walked along the footpath on the second bridge to avoid a busy period on the road - there's no space for traffic to get past and it was interestingly vertigo inducing to look from the pedestrian pathway down to the sea, running like a river between sheer rock walls - perhaps two hundred feet below the slender walkway with its modest railings, shaking a littleas the traffic went past... Then on to the library, the bookshop and Safeway Supermarket at Anacortes. Then off to the ferry terminal back near Washington Park where we camped on first reaching the west coast. Wild hops were growing alongside a path near the harbour, and roses covered in hips by the hundred. The ferry cost $20 each but that includes a return fare, so not bad for a sailing of an hour. Cormorants were gathered on the ferry's moorings, undisturbed by the ferry. The ferry winds its way through the many islands to San Juan Island - homes scattered along ridges overlooking the sea on Lopez Island, a small seaplane flying straight for Seattle. The sun came out as we sailed, and it's looking like summer again rather than autumn mist. We landed at the town of Friday Harbour, called in on the library as we cycled over to the west side of the island (bought a thriller- The Winter Queen by Boris Akunin, a respite from gritty tales of Colorado and Wyoming) and finally arrived at San Juan County Park at about 5pm. There are five bicycle tents here! A few more could be got into the hiker/biker area (called officially the 'human powered' area) - it overlooks the sea and has a food storage box to keep our food safe from foxes... An otter was swimming in a cove near the tent, once again a man was fishing near it. Perhaps the otters are a sign of a shoal. The sunset was impressive - the sun set over land in the far distance - Canada, about 10 to 20 miles away. There is no mobile signal - just Canadian - here so it may take a while to post this. We are here.
