The rain continued all day today, sometimes heavy though mostly just moderate steady rainfall. I finished Plainsong, the novel I started yesterday, such are the benefits of rain, and then downloaded Domestic Manners of the Americans by Fanny Trollope, published nearly two hundred years ago in 1832. I have already read about half the book. Set before the civil war, topics such as slavery loom fairly large, as do politics, male habits such as spitting and drinking whisky. She has only visited the eastern side of the country - largely in the vicinity of Washington DC, Baltimore and Philadelphia. Still very readable and full of witty observations. The rain ceased at about 6pm and we went shopping for dinner. The photo shows the rather damp scene viewed from the bike trail. On the way back there were even some hints of blue in the sky so it bodes well for getting over the next pass tomorrow. The current temperature though is only 10 centigrade and the air is damp and the temperatureis falling.... We are still here. [Later...] We've been surprised by the very early arrival of large campers - big caravans - for a horse event plus cattle show that all starts on Tuesday. Early eh? It is evidently a tradition to spend a day or two here before the show. We've packed up our tent to allow them into the tiny space occupied by our tent. These big vans need a lot of space - by tomorrow evening the place will be full, we just happened to pitch on the very spot the first arrivals had booked or perhaps they were bagging the best spot. I think technically you can't arrive before 11am, check out time for the previous day, but we can have an early start... and this is evidently a local tradition.
