Mike left before we even got up, hoping to make Huntington seemed his preferred route. We were aiming for longish day too, aided by gaining an extra hour as we crossed from Eastern Time to Central Time and put our clocks back one hour. At about the same time we went from Indiana to Illinois, which is our seventh state (NY, ME, NH, VT, OH, IN, IL). Lying in the tent in Ashkum after cycling the 74 miles, it does seem to have been a hot and humid day, without a thunderstorm to clear the air. Once again there has been very little food on the route. We rode via Monon, Rensellaer, which we diverted through in order to find food - we found a small Walmart (which is still a big store). This meant we had fresh veg for lunch - tomatoes and bread. Then on via Brook, Iriquois, then a bit more of the federal highway than the map said to avoid some gravel, ever on in very bright sun and a temperature of about 30 centigrade and high humidity, until we reached Ashkum. Here a filling station provided Hazy IPA beer and some Wisconsin dill cheese to go with our bread. In Ashkum we were welcomed into the community park (by the mayor and his wife which was very kind) and we are now trying to cool down in a rather hot tent. The heat dissipated overnight so we woke up to sunshine and mostly clear skies.
